AKRON, Ohio – The Miami softball team topped Akron, 7-3, Friday afternoon in the opening game of a three-game series. The bulk of the RedHawks' offensive attack came early in the contest as they scored five of their seven runs in the top of the second inning. After Miami's early flurry of runs, Akron struggled to recover, ending the game in a RedHawks' victory.
How it Happened:
- Courtney Vierstra got the start for the RedHawks in the series opener. The fifth-year senior recorded five strikeouts while allowing just three runs on nine hits in a complete-game performance.
- Holly Blaska performed well from the plate, finishing the game 2-for-4 with three RBI and a stolen base.
- Miami's dominant offensive run started with an RBI double from Lily Wilmot in the top of the second.
- A two-run double from Karli Spaid and a two-run single from Blaska would add four runs to the RedHawks' total, giving Miami an early 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the second inning.
- Akron would only answer back with one run after two full innings of play.
- Neither team recorded a run through the third and fourth innings.
- Thanks to an RBI from Kate Kobayashi in the fifth inning and another RBI single from Blaska in the top of the sixth, Miami's lead was extended to six runs.
- Akron would post two runs in the bottom of the final inning, but it proved to be not enough as the game ended in a 7-3 Miami victory.
Notes:
- Seven Miami batters recorded a hit in the contest.
- Spaid finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.
