RedHawks Hit Four Home Runs in 11-1 Win Over EKU

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Miami softball team traveled to take on Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday evening. After a slow start, the RedHawks scored six runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh, for an 11-1 win over EKU. Miami has now lost just once in its last 16 games and sits at 29-13-1 overall and 17-3 in Mid-American Conference play. The RedHawks hit four home runs in the win and established a new school record with 92 home runs on the year.

How it Happened:

Courtney Vierstra got the start in the circle for the RedHawks. The fifth year recorded three strikeouts through four innings while allowing just one run on one hit.
Brianna Pratt stepped in to relieve Vierstra in the bottom of the fifth. Pratt allowed zero runs and no hits in three innings pitched while striking out four EKU batters.
Karli Spaid had a fantastic day at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with four RBI and a pair of home runs.
Miami struck first in the top of the fourth after an RBI single from Holly Blaska put the RedHawks up 1-0.
EKU immediately answered in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game at one run apiece. However, the RedHawks' offensive attack couldn't be stopped.
In the top of the fifth, Miami produced a six-run flurry that included an RBI double from Allie Cummins and two two-run home runs from Spaid and Blaska, extending Miami's lead to 7-1.
EKU failed to mount any type of comeback as a solo home run from Kate Kobayashi, an RBI single from Cummins, and another two-run home run from Spaid ended the game in an 11-1 Miami victory.

Notes:

Nine different Miami batters recorded a hit in the game.
Cummins finished 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Blaska finished 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Miami opens up a weekend-long series against Akron on Friday. Opening pitch is slated for 3 p.m. in Akron.
