OXFORD, Ohio-- The Miami University softball team rallied from a four-run first-inning deficit to beat California 6-5 in non-conference action Friday.
Courtney Vierstra picked up a complete-game victory for the RedHawks (27-13). The Golden Bears fall to 25-19 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing 4-0, the RedHawks pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Karli Spaid ripped an RBI triple to get Miami on the board, and Holly Blaska followed with a single later in the inning to make it 4-2.
- Miami took the lead with four runs in the second frame. After Shelby Kunkel walked and Lily Wilmot was hit by a pitch, Chloe Parks came through with a two-run double to even the score at 4-all. Allie Cummins and Spaid contributed RBI singles to give Miami a 6-4 advantage and force the visitors to make a pitching change.
- Cal scored once in the top of the sixth to cut the RedHawks' lead to 6-5, but Vierstra finished off the Bears in the seventh to secure her 14th win of the season in the circle.
MIAMI GAME NOTES
- The RedHawks notched their 23rd win in the last 26 games.
- Miami finished with nine hits in the game by eight different players.
- Spaid was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
- Vierstra allowed six hits in seven innings and improved to 14-2 in her last 16 decisions.
