KALAMAZOO, Mich.-- The Miami University baseball team dropped an 11-9 decision to the Western Michigan Broncos Sunday afternoon. The RedHawks dropped to 14-21 (10-13 MAC) while the Broncos improve to 11-21 (8-10 MAC).
The offense continued to stay hot for the RedHawks, led by
Zach MacDonald,
Benji Brokemond,
Cole Andrews, and
Tyler Wardwell. Wardwell and MacDonald each had multiple RBIs, while Brokemond scored three runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the top of the first, Brokemond and Andrews singled, putting two runners on base. MacDonald then singled, driving in Brokemond. Following a balk, Brian Zapp drove in Andrews to put the 'Hawks up 2-0.
- In the top of the second, trailing 3-2, Parker Lester led off with a single, then advanced to third following a William Escala double. Wardwell then belted a three-run homer. Brokemond later singled, followed by Andrews reaching base on a hit by pitch and MacDonald single to load the bases. Zapp then drove in Brokemond with a sac fly.
- In the top of the fifth, Escala and Wardwell reached base on a pair of singles, putting runners on first and third. In the following at-bat, Escala scored on a wild pitch, putting the RedHawks up 7-4.
- In the top of the sixth, Brokemond led off with a walk, then was driven in by a MacDonald double. Two batters later, Stephen Krause's ground-rule double plated MacDonald, putting the RedHawks up 9-7.
- WMU scored the final four runs of the game to earn a split in the four-game series.

- MacDonald went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored.
- Brokemond reached base three times, with two base hits, a walk, and three runs.
- Kenten Egbert threw 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out four batters.
- Andrews went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
- Escala went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored.
- Wardwell went 2-for-5 with a three RBI, a run scored, and his first home run of the season.
