Buffalo, N.Y.– The Miami University softball team topped Buffalo in the final game of their series on Saturday afternoon. The RedHawks set the tone from the start of the contest, preventing Buffalo from generating any type of momentum. Miami's defense held the Bulls scoreless through six innings of play, ultimately resulting in a 9-0 run-rule victory for Miami. The RedHawks, winners of nine straight, improve to 24-12 overall and 15-2 in MAC play.
How it Happened:
- Courtney Vierstra stepped into the circle to start the final game of Miami's series with Buffalo. The senior pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out six opposing batters while allowing Buffalo just three hits in the contest.
- Allie Cummins went 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBI.
- Miami jumped out to an early lead after a Maggie Murphy solo home run in the top of the second and an RBI single from Karli Spaid in the top of the third.
- The RedHawks added two more runs in the top of the fourth thanks to solo home runs from Shelby Kunkel and Adriana Barlow, extending Miami's lead to 4-0.
- The Miami assault continued when Holly Blaska smashed a two-run home run in the top of the fifth.
- Cummins' two-run home run was part of a three-run swing by the RedHawks in the top of the sixth that extended Miami's lead to nine.
- Buffalo failed to answer in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game in a 9-0 run-rule victory for Miami.
