Softball Tops Buffalo in a Pair of Games on Friday

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Miami softball team opened its series with the University at Buffalo with a pair of games on Friday afternoon. The RedHawks topped the Bulls, 3-0, in the opening game. Miami established control from the start of the contest, never allowing the Bulls to generate any kind of momentum. Courtney Vierstra pitched a complete game shutout that helped solidify Miami's victory. Buffalo came out swinging in the second game of the doubleheader but ultimately couldn't handle the RedHawks' offensive attack. Miami picked up the win, 11-7. Miami is now 23-12 overall and 14-2 in conference play, tops in the MAC.
 
How it Happened (Game 1):
  • During her time in the circle. Vierstra pitched a complete game for the RedHawks, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts. 
  • The RedHawks struck first, posting two runs in the top of the third inning that included an RBI single from Kate Kobayashi
  • Both teams would fail to record a run through the following two innings, but a Lily Wilmot home run in the top of the sixth would extend Miami's lead to three.
  • Buffalo failed to mount any kind of counterattack in the final inning, ending the contest in a 3-0 victory for Miami. 
Notes:
  • Kobayashi finished 2-for-4 from the plate with an RBI.
  • Wilmot finished 1-for-3 with a home run.
  • Six different Miami batters recorded a hit in the game. 
How it Happened (Game 2):
  • Brianna Pratt got the start in the circle for Miami in the second game, striking out eight Bulls.
  • Maggie Murphy put on a great performance from the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI in the game.
  • Miami found themselves behind early after Buffalo posted two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The RedHawks would immediately answer back with a run of their own in the top of the second after Chloe Parks grounding out allowed Riley Coyne to race home for the score.
  • Through the third and fourth innings, a three-run home run from Murphy and a solo home run from Allie Cummins would give Miami a 5-2 lead over Buffalo. 
  • A three-point swing for Miami that included RBI singles from Karli Spaid and Holly Blaska gave the RedHawks an 8-2 lead after six innings.
  • A Coyne two-run home run and another RBI single from Spaid would cap off Miami's offensive surge in the top of the seventh. 
  • Buffalo mounted a counterattack in the bottom of the inning, posting five runs to their total, but it proved to be too late. Miami took topped Buffalo 11-7. 
Notes:
  • Eight Miami batters recorded a hit.
  • Coyne finished 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBI and a home run.
  • Blaska recorded three stolen bases in the game.

Miami returns to action on Saturday to close out the series against Buffalo. Opening pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
