OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami softball team kicked off a two-day series against Western Michigan Sunday afternoon. In the first game, the RedHawks dominated both offensively and defensively from the opening pitch. Miami's attack never allowed the Broncos to get anything going which ultimately lead to the game ending in an 8-0 run-rule victory for the RedHawks. The second game saw a lot of the same. Miami jumped out to a early lead and prevented WMU from generating any kind of momentum. The RedHawks gave up just two hits in the contest, ending the game in a 6-0 Miami win.
How it Happened (Game 1):
- Courtney Vierstra got the start in the first game for Miami. The senior struck out five WMU batters while allowing just one hit in a complete-game shutout.
- Kate Kobayashi went 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBI in the contest.
- Kobayashi kicked off the game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, giving the RedHawks an early 2-0 lead.
- A Holly Blaska RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Maggie Murphy in the bottom of the third would add two runs to Miami's lead halfway through the contest.
- The RedHawk assault continued through the bottom of the fifth after the RedHawks recorded three runs in the inning that included a two-run double from Shelby Kunkel.
- Allie Cummins dealt the final blow with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game via run rule, 8-0.
Notes:
- Kunkel finished a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with two RBI.
- Karli Spaid recorded two stolen bases in the contest.
How it Happened (Game 2):
- Brianna Pratt stepped into the circle to start the second game for the RedHawks. Pratt recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts while only allowing two hits the whole contest.
- Miami maintained momentum going into the second game. Maggie Murphy's two-run home run in the bottom of the second allowed the RedHawks to jump ahead early in the contest.
- Moving into the bottom of the fourth, Miami tacked on four more runs to their total that included an RBI single from Kobayashi and a two-run double from Blaska.
- The Broncos failed to mount any kind of counter attack, ending the game in a 6-0 victory for Miami.
