Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The Miami softball team dropped a pair of games against Texas and Alabama Sunday afternoon. Against Texas, the RedHawks put up a tough fight but couldn't outlast the Longhorns, losing 7-6. Against Alabama, Miami took the lead early but struggled as the game developed, falling to the Crimson Tide on a run-rule, 10-2.
How it Happened (Texas):
- Courtney Vierstra got the start for the RedHawks, striking out five while allowing seven runs through 4.2 innings.
- Taylor Turner came in to relieve Vierstra in the bottom of the fifth, striking out one batter while allowing only one hit during her one inning in the circle.
- Karli Spaid got back on track at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two home runs in the contest.
- Maggie Murphy also added a good performance from the plate after she went 2-for-3 with an RBI of her own.
- The RedHawks took control of the game early, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after a sacrifice fly from Jenna Golembiewski allowed Lily Wilmot to race home for a score.
- In the following inning and a half, Miami would extend their lead to 3-0 thanks to home runs from Spaid and Murphy in the top of the third and fourth innings.
- The Longhorns would answer back quickly with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning, tying the game at three.
- Miami would add two more runs to their total at the top of the fifth courtesy of home runs from Allie Cummins and Kate Kobayashi. However, Texas would immediately answer, recording five runs in the bottom of the inning.
- Another Spaid home run in the top of the seventh gave the RedHawks a bit of life but ultimately proved not to be enough, as Miami dropped the game 7-6.
Notes:
- Five different RedHawk batters recorded an RBI, while three different batters recorded a home run.
- Seven different Miami batters recorded a hit in the contest.
How it Happened (Alabama):
- Brianna Pratt started for Miami in the second game of their doubleheader but struggled to get anything going. Through 1.2 innings, the junior pitcher allowed eight runs while only striking out two batters.
- The RedHawks would cycle through two more pitchers in the contest. Taylor Turner came in to relieve Pratt in the bottom of the second. Through 1.1 innings, Turner gave up two runs off of three hits without a strikeout.
- Laurelai DePew saw her first action of the season after coming in to relieve Turner in the bottom of the fourth. The freshman pitched the remainder of the contest, allowing just two hits.
- An RBI triple from Lily Wilmot gave the RedHawks a 1-0 lead at the top of the first, but Alabama would provide an immediate answer, posting three runs in the bottom of the inning.
- The RedHawks were unable to answer back in the following two innings as The Tide would go on to add seven runs to their total.
- . Karli Spaid tried to spark a Miami comeback with a home run in the top of the fourth, but to no avail, as the RedHawks lost on a run-rule, 10-2.
