TOLEDO, Ohio — The Miami baseball team dropped a pair of games by the slimmest of margins Friday afternoon in Toledo, falling 8-7 in 12 innings and then by a score of 3-2 in game two.
The Rockets improve to 11-10, 6-4 MAC, while the RedHawks' record now stands at 7-13, 4-6 MAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game One)
- The RedHawks got on the board with a run in the top of the first inning. After JJ Woolwine led things off with a single, a walk and a pair of fly balls brought him around to score. Stephen Krause picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly to center.
- Miami made it 2-0 in the third, as Brian Zapp's bases-loaded walk drove in Cole Andrews, who had started the inning with a single into left.
- The Rockets rallied to take a 4-2 lead with a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings.
- William Escala's triple in the fifth inning set up an RBI single for Zapp to trim the margin to 4-3, but Toledo responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to regain a two-run lead.
- The RedHawks struck for three runs in the top of the sixth. Nick Neibauer singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, moved to third on an Andrews single, and came home courtesy of another Krause sac fly. Zach MacDonald followed with a two-run homer to center to give the visitors a 6-5 lead.
- Toledo knotted things up on a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-6.
- The score remained tied until the 12th inning. Miami took a 7-6 lead in the top half of the inning on MacDonald's RBI single, but the Rockets' Darryn Davis hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th to end the game.
MIAMI GAME NOTES (Game One)
- Andrews and Zapp each had three hits to lead the RedHawks' offense.
- Miami produced five extra-base hits.
- Kenten Egbert pitched the final 5.2 innings, striking out seven and allowing two runs.
- MacDonald's home run was the first of his college career.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game Two)
- Miami got things started in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead. After Andrews reached on a fielder's choice, Krause drove him in with an RBI double.
- The Rockets went on top with a two-run homer in the bottom of the third.
- Toledo made it 3-1 with a home run in the fourth inning.
- Zapp cut the deficit to 3-2 with a solo shot in the seventh, but Miami was unable to push across a tying run.
MIAMI GAME NOTES (Game Two)
- Zapp's homer was his second of the season.
- The RedHawks stole three bases, with Zapp taking two and Krause one.
- Luke Leverton and Martin Sosna combined to strike out seven Rockets in six innings.
