TOLEDO, Ohio — The Miami baseball team outlasted Toledo 14-13 in a 12-inning thriller Saturday afternoon.
Dom Magliocca drove in
Parker Lester for the go-ahead run in the 12th after the RedHawks had scored twice in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to help erase what had been an 11-7 deficit.
Zach MacDonald led the offensive attack for the Red and White with three hits, four runs scored, and three RBI.
Patrick Mastrian IV picked up the win on the mound, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings in relief.
Miami improves to 8-13 (5-6 MAC), while Toledo falls to 11-11 (6-5 MAC).
Due to the threat of inclement weather, the fourth game of the series, which was previously scheduled for Sunday, has been canceled.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The RedHawks tallied a run in each of the first two innings. Nick Neibauer came around to score Miami's opening run after his first-inning double, and Zach MacDonald increased the visitors' advantage to 2-0 in the second, racing home after a passed ball.
- Miami made it 5-0 in the third. Cole Andrews led off with a solo home run to get things started, and Brian Zapp used a one-out walk to get on base, eventually scoring on a MacDonald RBI single. MacDonald crossed the plate for the third Miami run of the inning after a Toledo error.
- The Rockets got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of runs, cutting the RedHawks' lead to 5-2.
- Miami responded with two runs in the fifth. Benji Brokemond was hit by a pitch and advanced to third base on a MacDonald double. Lester drove in Brokemond with an RBI groundout, and MacDonald then came around to score after a Toledo error during the next at-bat.
- Toledo took its first lead later in the inning, pushing across six runs. The Rockets added three in the sixth to take an 11-7 advantage.
- Miami cut the deficit to 11-9 in the seventh on a Magliocca double and MacDonald two-run homer to center field.
- The RedHawks tied the game at 11-all in the eighth inning on a two-out, two-run double from Brokemond. Andrews and Stephen Krause both came around to score after recording hits earlier in the frame.
- Toledo went on top 12-11 in the bottom of the eighth after a solo home run.
- Miami wouldn't go away, striking for two runs in the ninth. With one out, Magliocca was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. After a Neibauer walk, both runners came around to score thanks to a pair of Toledo errors, giving the RedHawks a 13-12 lead.
- The Rockets knotted things up at 13-13 on an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth.
- Neither team scored in the 10th or 11th, setting the stage for Magliocca's RBI single in the 12th, which put Miami ahead for good.
MIAMI GAME NOTES
- Seven different RedHawks had extra-base hits, as Miami pounded six doubles and two home runs in the game.
- Zapp stole two bases for the second consecutive game.
- Four Miami pitchers combined to strike out 15 Toledo hitters.
- Andrews, Escala, Lester, Magliocca, and MacDonald all had multi-hit games for the RedHawks.
