
Softball Splits a Pair of Games Friday Night

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Miami University softball team traveled to South Carolina on Friday night and split a pair of games against Troy and the University of South Carolina. The RedHawks only managed one hit in their game against Troy, dropping the game 5-1 through eight innings of play. Miami bounced back against South Carolina, shutting out the Gamecock 5-0.

Miami is back in action again Saturday morning, as they take on Virginia Tech. Opening pitch against the Hokies is slated for 10:30 a.m.
How it Happened (Troy):
- In her third start of the season, Courtney Vierstra pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts and two batters walked. Vierstra allowed no runs through six innings but conceded all five of Troy's runs in the last inning and a half of play.
- Karli Spaid extended her hitting streak to six games going 1-for-3 from the plate against the Trojans.
- Both teams struggled from the plate with each being held without a hit till the seventh inning.
- Troy scored the first run of the game off a homerun in the top of the seventh inning, giving the Trojans a late 1-0 lead.
- Miami answered back in the bottom of the seventh after a sacrifice fly from Karlee Juarez allowed Allie Cummins to race home, tying the game at 1-1 and sending the game into extra innings.
- The Trojans would score 4 runs in the top of the eighth, ultimately proving to be too much for the RedHawks as the game ended in a 5-1 loss for Miami.
- Karlee Juarez recorded one RBI through eight innings.
- Brianna Pratt recorded her second win of the season, pitching a complete game while walking only two batters and allowing five hits.
- Riley Coyne went 1-for-3 and recorded her first homerun of the season on a solo homerun in the top of the sixth inning.
- The RedHawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the top of the third behind RBIs from Karli Spaid (single) and Allie Cummins (double).
- Miami would go on to add three more runs between the fourth and sixth innings, shutting out the Gamecocks 5-0.
- Five different RedHawks recorded a hit including Maclai Branson (solo homerun) and Jenna Golembiewski (double).
