MARTIN, Tenn. — The Miami University baseball team used a complete team effort to post a 15-6 win in Friday's season opener at Tennessee Martin. Nine different Miami hitters had at least a hit and a run scored to help the RedHawks improve to 1-0 on the season.
Jonathan Brand got the start on the mound and went six innings to pick up the win for the Red and White, striking out 10 while allowing just four hits and one earned run.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the second inning, the RedHawks struck first on a William Escala single, driving in Zach MacDonald. Escala later scored on a Brian Zapp single.
- Leading 2-1, the RedHawks exploded for five fourth-inning runs. MacDonald singled and advanced to second on a Dalton Back walk. Following a double steal, Nick Neibauer then drove both players in with a two-run single. After a Christian Tejada single, Nate Stone tripled, driving in Tejada and Neibauer. Stone eventually scored on a balk.
- In the top of the seventh, leading 7-3, the RedHawks struck again. Cole Andrews led things off with a single before MacDonald and Escala walks loaded the bases. Back then drove in Andrews and MacDonald, extending the Miami lead to six.
- In the top of the eighth, leading 9-6, the RedHawks added an insurance run. Neibauer walked before pitch-hitter JJ Woolwine singled, putting two men on. Following an Andrews walk, MacDonald was hit by a pitch to make it 10-6.
- In the top of the ninth, the RedHawks exploded for five runs to put the game out of reach. After reaching on an error, Zapp scored on a Neibauer single. After a Tejada single, Woolwine bunted to bring home Neibauer. Tejada then scored on a failed pickoff attempt. Later in that same at-bat, Andrews belted a homer to finish the scoring.
NOTES:
- Stone was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI's.
- Woolwine went 2-for-2 off the bench with an RBI.
- In his first game with the RedHawks, MacDonald reached base four times, scored three times, drove in a run, stole a base.
- Neibauer reached base four times, driving in two runs and scoring three runs.
- Andrews' home run was the 11th of his career.
