AKRON, Ohio— Miami (7-20) won a three-set match against Akron (5-22), 30-28, 25-20, 25-23. Sophomore Caroline Cermack made the first start of her career; she recorded a career-high of seven kills. Allyson Severance had the game-high of 12 kills and Brooke Jackson followed closely behind with nine.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
In what was a hard-fought first set, Miami took an early 3-2 lead. A pair of kills from Cermack and Gentry Warrick helped the RedHawks pull ahead. Akron then outscored Miami 4-1 to take a 6-4 lead. Miami tied the set at 10-10 after a couple of attack errors from Akron. The Zips took their largest lead of the set at 21-16. A kill from Jackson sparked the RedHawks, closing within two at 20-22. Miami tied the score once again at 23-23. After much back-and-forth, late kills from Cermack and Jackson sealed a 30-28 win.

The score was tied 5-5 at the start of the second set. The RedHawks took an 11-7 lead after a flurry of points which included a Jackson service ace, two kills from Severance, a Warrick block, and an Abby Stratford kill. The Zips closed within one point at 16-15. The RedHawks were able to maintain their lead and win the set 25-20.

The Red and White took a 3-1 lead after back-to-back service aces from Hayden Hicks. Miami found their momentum, going on to extend their lead to 13-4. Akron came back to trail only four points at 14-10. A pair of kills from Jackson helped the RedHawk offense get back on track. The Zips stayed resilient, closing the score within one point at 23-22. The RedHawks were able to clinch the set off of two clutch kills from Jackson to win 25-23.

NOTES:

Cermack recorded seven kills, a hitting percentage of .333, and an assist in her first career start
Severance tied the game-high of 12 kills
Lydia Harper had the team-high of 21 assists
Hicks tied the game-high of two service aces
Jacquelyn Krumnauer had the game-high of 11 digs
