Miami Earns Two Points in Tie at No. 7 UMD

DULUTH, Minn. — Miami's Ludvig Persson made a season-high 50 saves and the RedHawks battled No. 7/7 Minnesota Duluth to a 2-2 tie Saturday night. Persson also stopped all three UMD attempts in the shootout, as Miami earned an extra point in the NCHC standings with a shootout win.

Matthew Barbolini and Thomas Daskas scored second-period goals for the RedHawks (4-16-2, 1-10-1 NCHC), and Red Savage converted in the shootout against UMD (12-8-2, 5-3-2 NCHC). Nick Donato had two assists in the game for the Red and White.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 14:01 1st (UMD 1-0) | Minnesota Duluth started the scoring late in the first period. With multiple bodies screening Persson in front as the puck was initially fired at the goal, Jesse Jacques was able to track down the rebound and flip it in from the left side of the net. Koby Bender and Owen Gallatin had assists on the play for UMD.
  • 11:11 2nd (Miami 1-1) | The RedHawks found the back of the net on just their fourth shot on goal of the evening. Savage set up the play with some skillful stickhandling on the right side, leaving it for Donato trailing behind him. Donato's long-distance shot in was redirected and tipped home by Barbolini.
  • 13:44 2nd (Miami 2-1) | Miami continued to build momentum with a go-ahead goal just over two minutes later. PJ Fletcher cycled around the UMD zone and fed it to Donato for a blistering one-timer from the blue line. Daskas cleaned up the play in front and stuffed it past Ryan Fanti to put the RedHawks up 2-1.
  • 18:22 3rd (UMD 2-2) | With the Bulldogs' net empty, Minnesota Duluth took advantage of its extra attacker to even the score at 2-2. Darian Gotz passed to Wyatt Kaiser, who set up Kobe Roth in the middle of the Miami zone. Persson got a piece of the Roth shot attempt but was unable to keep it out.

GAME NOTES:
  • The RedHawks killed all five UMD power plays, including a 4-on-3 in overtime.
  • Donato recorded the first multi-point game of his college career.
  • Miami won 40 of the 71 faceoffs, with Daskas controlling 9 of his 11 draws and Joe Cassetti capturing 9 of 12.
  • Persson's previous season high for saves was 37 (twice). His career high is 55 saves (also at Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 6, 2021).
  • Persson was named the NCHC First Star of the Game, with Barbolini earning the Third Star.
