RedHawks Capture 3-1 Win Against Cougars

DURHAM, N.C.—Earning its first win of the season to open its stint at the Duke Invitational, the Miami University volleyball team (1-3) downed the College of Charleston (3-2) on Friday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium in four sets, 25-19, 15-25, 25-23, 25-18.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Miami took an early 7-4 lead in the first set and extended its lead to 19-12 off a senior Sophie Riemersma kill. The RedHawks continued to command the set and notched a 25-19 win in the opening set. Sophomore Abby Stratford posted six kills off seven attempts with no attack errors for a .857 hitting percentage in the set as the RedHawks hit a strong .312 as a team in the opening set.
  • The second set was back-and-forth early on until the Cougars used a 6-0 flurry to push ahead 16-10. A block from sophomore Maggie McCrary and senior Gaby Harper put the RedHawks within 17-15, but the Cougars rattled off eight unanswered points to take the second set, 25-15.
  • Miami took an early 9-4 lead off successive kills from McCrary, Stratford and junior Allyson Severance. A block from Riemersma and freshman Brooke Cirigliano extended the RedHawk lead to 19-13. The Cougars climbed back to knot the game, 23-23, but Kills from Riemersma and Severance handed the RedHawks a 25-23 win in the third set.
  • Miami never trailed in the fourth set. The RedHawks used a 7-1 flurry to push ahead to a 19-11 lead and rolled to the 25-18 win in the fourth set to clinch the match. Freshman Gracie Norris served up all three of her aces in the fourth set.
THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH CAROLYN CONDIT:
"Meaningful teamwork resulted in our first win of the season. We turned out our best match defensively to date, produced timely serving and three attackers led the way with double digit kills.  Abby Stratford led the way with 18. Freshmen Gracie Norris and Lydia Harper teamed up for the first time and orchestrated a successful offense."

NOTES:
  • Stratford led all players with a career-high 18 kills and hit .600 for the match.
  • Freshman Lydia Harper saw her first action as a RedHawk and amassed 23 assists.
  • Sophomore Taylor Nomanson notched 13 digs to lead the RedHawks.
