Coach Bergeron announced today that senior Derek Daschke will captain the 2021-22 RedHawks
Miami RedHawks hockey coach Chris Bergeron announced today that senior defenseman Derek Daschke has been named the team's captain for the 2021-22 season.
Â
Daschke, a native of Troy, Michigan, has played in 97 career games for the Red and White, tallying 20 goals and 37 assists.
Â
"I think it's a huge honor to be captain here at Miami," said Daschke. "There have been a lot of great captains that have come before me, and I think it's a huge accomplishment…I'm really proud to take on the challenge."
Â
"All of us coaches have been in leadership roles before as players, so we know how important it is," said Bergeron. "Derek is somebody that we have paid close attention to for the time we've been here and he's been as consistent as anybody we've had in terms of his daily approach, both on and off the ice.
Â
"I truly think he wants to leave Miami hockey better than he found it," said Bergeron. "That's something that is important to us, and we want that to bleed over into his teammates, and we want that to be something he leads the way with."
Â
The RedHawks open the season Saturday, October 2 at Ferris State University.
