
RedHawks Snatch Pair of Doubleheader Wins Against KSU

OXFORD, Ohio—Despite a lengthy break between the two games due to weather, the Miami University softball team picked up a pair of wins against the Kent State University Golden Flashes on Friday evening in Oxford. Miami claimed a 3-0 win in the first game and captured a 7-3 win in the nightcap. The RedHawks improve to 38-8 on the season and 28-2 in Mid-American Conference action, while KSU drops to 22-23 overall and 18-13 in MAC play.
GAME ONE:
After two scoreless innings, freshman Karlee Juarez walked to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Karli Spaid stepped to the plate in the next at-bat and blasted a two-run homer over the left center field fence to hand Miami a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, senior Lily Wilmot drilled a solo shot over the center field fence to push the Miami lead to 3-0.
Spaid and senior Mackenzie Moore were the two RedHawks with multi-hit games, each going 2-for-3 at the plate. Spaid also had a run and two RBI. Senior Courtney Vierstra pitched 7.0 innings, giving up just four hits while striking out 14 Golden Flashes.
GAME TWO:
The Golden Flashes jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the second game, but Miami cut the deficit, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Holly Blaska hit an RBI single to plate junior Riley Coyne. Junior Adriana Barlow then stole home to put the RedHawks within 3-2 of KSU.
Wilmot nailed her second home run of the doubleheader, a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth, to put Miami on top, 4-3.
The RedHawks added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 7-3. Coyne and Blaska each went 2-for-3 at the plate in the second game with Coyne scoring a run and Blaska notching two RBI. Junior Brianna Pratt threw the first 4.0 innings to earn the win, while Vierstra came in to pitch the final 3.0 innings to pick up the save in the circle for the RedHawks.

Miami and Kent State return to action at the Miami Softball Complex on Saturday, May 8 for a 2 p.m. doubleheader to round out the four-game series. Miami will honor four of its graduating seniors prior to the first game: Jada Dotson, Morgan Lott, Taylor Rathe and Mackenzie Moore.
