Baseball Falls in Series Finale with Falcons

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Despite a three-run eighth inning to tie the game, the Miami University baseball team was edged in a mid-week decision at Bowling Green on Tuesday afternoon, 9-7. The RedHawks fall to 25-27 on the season and 18-18 in the Mid-American Conference, while the Falcons improve to 17-29 overall and 15-21 in the MAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Miami got their scoring off to a solid start in the second inning, with Brian Zapp scoring off a home run to make it a 2-1 game. Later in the third inning, Billy Kopicki scored and Mac Hippenhammer to advance to third on Michael Morissette's ground out. Will Vogelgesang hit a single up the middle, scoring Hippenhammer to get the RedHawks within two, 5-3.
  • In the fourth, Zapp continued to shine for Miami, scoring after Kopicki grounded out to shortstop. Kopicki added another RBI to his stat line in the eighth, flying out of the left-field, plating Jacob Hensor to make it 7-5.
  • Morissette drilled a two-run single to center field in the seventh inning, allowing Dalton Back and Cole Andrews to score a pair of runs to knot the game at seven. However, the Falcons added two runs to their lead at the bottom of the eighth and got the victory, 9-7.

MIAMI GAME NOTES:

  • Hippenhammer went 2-for-3, scoring a run in the eighth inning as a part of Morissette's game-tying hit.
  • Zapp went 2-for-5 on the day, scoring a pair of runs, which included a home run in the second inning. His home run is his sixth on the season and ties the team lead.
  • Three pitchers saw action on the mound for Miami as Lawson Blackmore earned his third start on the season. Michael Spinozzi pitched 3.2 innings in relief, while Kenten Egbert made up the rest of the game, pitching three innings to record the loss.
