RedHawks Fall 6-3 at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -- Despite late scoring threats, the Miami University baseball team fell to the West Virginia University Mountaineers by a score of 6-3 on Saturday afternoon.

The Mountaineers scored two runs in the first inning and one in the second to kick things off and never looked back to get the win. Miami rallied in the ninth inning after redshirt freshman Benji Brokemond got on base with a bunt single followed by a walk to fifth-year Will Vogelgesang. However, WVU escaped the final inning to hand the RedHawks the loss. The RedHawks fall to 21-24 on the season, while the Mountaineers improve to 20-23.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the top of the second inning, senior catcher Nate Stolze singled to center field, allowing junior Cole Andrews to score, cutting the Mountaineer lead in half.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, Vogelgesang would ground out, allowing sophomore Brian Zapp to score, making it a 4-2 ballgame.
  • While trailing 6-2, a rally started in the top of the eighth inning. Stolze flew out to the left-field, allowing redshirt freshman Nate Stone to score, making it a 6-3 game.

MIAMI GAME NOTES:

  • Senior Parker Massman went 3-for-4 with a double.
  • Stolze went 1-for-3 with two RBI
  • Zapp went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, reaching base twice.
