Joyner's Hat Trick Powers RedHawks to 4-2 Win over Kent State

OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University field hockey team picked up its sixth consecutive conference win on Saturday afternoon when the RedHawks downed Kent State, 4-2, at the Miami Field Hockey Complex. Miami established a 3-0 lead after three quarters of play, allowing just six shots the entire match.

Allie Grace Joyner provided the RedHawks (9-1, 6-0 Mid-American Conference) three of their four goals, while Leonor Berlie tallied the other Miami goal. Paula Peña, Noor Breedijk, and Berlie all registered assists in the victory. The Golden Flashes' Emma Bressler and Luisa Knapp added both goals for the visitors. In her ninth win on the season, Isabelle Perese made four saves. Azure Fernsler made ten saves for the Golden Flashes (5-3, 3-3 MAC) in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • 12:41 | Off a penalty stroke, Berlie got the 'Hawks on the board first, scoring her fourth of the season to make it a 1-0 game early.
  • 16:56 | Peña passed the ball over to an open Joyner, who got it in the back of the cage to increase the Miami lead to two goals.
  • 30:59 | Joyner wasn't finished after her first goal and got a pass from Breedijk to score her second of the game to give Miami a 3-0 lead over Kent State.
  • 44:22 | Kent State responded in the third quarter after Bressler scored from up top to get the Golden Flashes on the board.
  • 47:46 | Berlie shot the ball toward the goal from the corner, but Joyner got her stick on the deflection in front to score. Joyner's goal, her sixth of the season, gave her a hat trick to increase the Miami lead to 4-2.
  • 59:21 | In the closing seconds of the match, Knapp got one past the Miami defense to finish the game with a 4-2 score.

GAME NOTES:

  • Miami outshot Kent State 20-6 on the day, including 15-6 on shots on goal.
  • The RedHawks earned six penalty corners, compared to two for the Golden Flashes.
  • Joyner's hat trick marks the first one of her career. The three goals also tie her for the team-lead in goals, with six.

After the series sweep, the RedHawks will enjoy a week off before hosting MAC opponent Appalachian State on April 16 and 17. Game one of the series on Friday, April 16, is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Miami Field Hockey Complex.
