OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University field hockey team remains undefeated in Mid-American Conference play, as the RedHawks downed Appalachian State University 5-1 at the Miami Field Hockey Complex on Friday afternoon. Miami established a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the contest and allowed just five shots on goal the entire 60 minutes of action.
Paula Peña provided the RedHawks (10-1, 7-0 MAC) two of the five goals, while Leonor Berlie, Allie Grace Joyner, and Claudia Negrete Garcia tallied the other Miami goals on the day. Jenna Kirby and Berlie also registered assists in the victory. Isabelle Perese tallied four saves for her third straight win.
The Mountaineers drop to 7-6 overall and 4-5 in MAC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 5:05 | The RedHawks got the scoring started early. Peña one-timed the ball in to give the RedHawks an early 1-0 lead with her first goal of the game.
- 25:53 | Off a penalty corner, Berlie sniped a shot in the back of the net to extend the Miami lead to two.
- 33:19 | Kirby gave a pass to an open Joyner, who recorded her first of the game and her seventh of the season to put Miami ahead, 3-0.
- 34:36 | The Mountaineers got on the board in the third quarter, with Meghan Smart collecting the rebound from Grace Ball's shot on goal.
- 35:30 | Peña responded to App State's goal less than a minute later, scoring her second of the game to continue Miami's explosive third quarter to give the 'Hawks a three-goal lead.
- 53:15 | Negrete scored the final goal of the game in the fourth quarter, putting Miami's fifth goal in the back of the cage after a pass from Berlie.
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
- Miami outshot App State 28-7 on the day, including 17-5 margin for on shots on goal.
- The 'Hawks earned 15 penalty corners, and the Mountaineers had none during the contest.
- With their goals today, Joyner and Negrete both tie the team lead in goals on the season, with seven each.
- Miami has now won eight straight against the Mountaineers and is 8-2 in the last 10 games against MAC foes.
