MUNCIE, Ind. — Building a 2-0 first-half lead after scoring on opportunistic chances, the No. 17 Miami University field hockey team shutout Mid-American Conference rival Ball State, 5-0, for its fifth consecutive victory on Friday. The victory in Muncie allows the RedHawks to remain undefeated in MAC play at 9-0.
Freshman Jenna Kirby scored he first career goal in the fourth quarter, and goals from Allie Grace Joyner, Leonor Berlie, Paula Peña, and Claudia Negrete Garcia also helped lift Miami (12-1, 9-0 MAC) over the Cardinals. In the cage, Isabelle Perese tallied her sixth shutout on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 4:45 | Kirby got the Miami penalty corner, and Joyner got her stick on the ball in front to make it a 1-0 game early.
- 16:56 | Berlie converted on a penalty corner, increasing the Miami lead to two early in the second quarter.
- 49:30 | Off a deflection, Peña capitalized in front to make it 3-0.
- 55:31 | Shortly after the third goal, Kirby got the ball from Lilly Petersen, and Kirby scored the first goal of her career to make it 4-0.
- 59:11 | Negrete scored the final goal of the game, moving around the Ball State defense after getting the ball from the corner.
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
- The RedHawks continued to see success in the shots category, outshooting the Cardinals by a 27-2 margin, including 15-0 for shots on goal. On the season, the RedHawks have outshot the opposition by a 250-64 mark.
- Miami also had the advantage in corners, taking 17 to Ball State's four.
