Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Kent State

OXFORD, Ohio —  The Miami University baseball team started their series with Kent State by splitting a doubleheader matchup with the Golden Flashes. In game one, the RedHawks fell in extra innings 3-2, while Miami won the second game of the day, 1-0.

With the split, the RedHawks move to 19-13 (12-6 Mid-American Conference), while the Golden Flashes move to 15-18 (8-10 MAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In game one, while trailing 2-0, the RedHawks rallied in the bottom of the sixth to tie up the game at 2-2. Sophomore Brian Zapp led off with a single, then senior Nate Stolze and junior Nick Neibauer walked to load the bases. Junior Mac Hippenhammer, who came in to run for Stolze, and Zapp ended up scoring on a graduate student Will Vogelgesang single, tying it up. Kent State, however, clinched the first game with a run in the top of the eighth inning.
  • In game two, the RedHawks broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior Parker Massman led off with a double. He then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt before being driven in by sophomore Billy Kopicki's single to score the game winner.

GAME NOTES:

  • Vogelgesang went 2-for-4 in game one with two RBI. In game two, he was 3-for-3.
  • Redshirt freshman Nate Stone went 2-for-4 with a double in game one.
  • Grant Hartwig threw six innings, striking out seven batters while allowing just two earned runs in game one.
  • Jonathan Brand threw five scoreless innings in game two, striking out six batters.
