YPSILANTI, Mich. — Behind spectacular pitching from Jacob Webb and Grant Hartwig, along with a home run from Brian Zapp, the Miami University baseball team picked up a conference road victory over the Eastern Michigan Eagles, 4-3, on Friday afternoon.
With the road win, the RedHawks continue the season with a 14-9 overall record (7-2 Mid-American Conference), while Eastern Michigan falls to 8-10 (4-5 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the top of the second inning, junior Cole Andrews led things off with a single. Later in the frame, senior Michael Morissette walked, putting two RedHawks on base. Zapp then followed up with a home run to right field, allowing the RedHawks to bring in three runners to give Miami an early 3-0 lead.
- At the top of the fifth, graduate student Will Vogelgesang reached base on an error that allowed him to get to second base. Freshman Dalton Back followed by singling up the middle, which allowed Vogelgesang to score and secure the road victory by making it 4-3.
GAME NOTES:
- Vogelgesang went 2-for-4 on the day, contributing with a triple and a run scored.
- Back also had a solid day for the RedHawks and went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
- Andrews went 2-for-3 with a run scored while also reaching on a hit by pitch.
- Hartwig started on the mound for Miami and threw six innings, striking out seven while allowing just two runs. Webb came in and pitched three innings in relief, striking out four.
WHAT'S NEXT:
After taking game one, The RedHawks will square off with the Eagles in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 3. The first pitch for game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium.
