Field Hockey Clinches MAC Title with 7-0 Victory Over ASU

OXFORD, Ohio — Seven goals from six different RedHawks and a shutout performance from Isabelle Perese propelled the Miami University field hockey team to a 7-0 victory over Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon at the Miami Field Hockey Complex.

Claudia Negrete Garcia, Noor Breedijk, Neely Lochmoeller, Allie Grace Joyner, Lexie Nugent, and Laurel Dortch all scored in the contest for Miami (11-1, 8-0 MAC), which allowed the RedHawks to clinch the Spring 2021 Mid-American Conference title for the season, along with an NCAA tournament berth. Negrete, Leonor Berlie, Paula Peña, and Luli Rosso each tallied assists for Miami. The defense was critical for Miami, as the RedHawks held the Mountaineers to no shots and no penalty corners in the match. Miami outshot App State by a massive 16-0 margin and had eight penalty corners.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • 3:17 | Joyner found an open Negrete, who was able to get the game scoring started early to make it 1-0.
  • 5:23 | Berlie shot an initial shot toward the Mountaineer goalkeeper, and Breedijk got her stick on the rebound to increase the Miami lead to two.
  • 11:59 | Off the penalty corner, Berlie shot the ball toward the goal, and Lochmoeller got her stick on the ball in front to score the third Miami goal of the first quarter.
  • 18:34 | Berlie found Joyner open on the inside the circle, who shot it to the right side of the net.
  • 35:16 | Negrete passed to Nugent, who weaved around before firing a shot into the open net.
  • 36:55 | Off another penalty corner, Lochmoeller inserted to Peña, who gave it to Nugent, who scored her second of the quarter to make it 6-0.
  • 37:48 | Rosso was set up for a penalty corner and gave the ball to Dortch, and she ripped the ball in the back of the cage for the first goal of her career.

MIAMI GAME NOTES:
