
Explosive Offense Leads Baseball to 16-9 Win Over Broncos

OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University baseball team exploded for 16 runs, including nine runs in the first inning, en route to a 16-9 win against the Western Michigan Broncos at McKie Field on Sunday afternoon. Benji Brokemond led the way for the RedHawks, going 4-for-5 on the day with three runs scored and three RBI.
With the victory, the RedHawks improve to 18-12 (11-5 Mid-American Conference), while the Broncos fall to 10-12 (10-6 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the bottom of the first inning, the RedHawks exploded for seven hits, two walks, two hit-by-pitches, and nine runs. Senior Michael Morissette had a three-RBI triple, while Brokemond went 2-for-2 in the inning with an RBI. Nate Stone, Will Vogelgesang, Dalton Back, Cole Andrews, Billy Kopicki, and Brian Zapp all had either a single, RBI, or both.
- In the bottom of the second inning, junior Nick Neibauer led off with a walk. In the next at-bat, he stole second base, then advanced to third on an error. Morissette walked, then Brokemond double-plated both runners. Brokemond then stole third and scored on a bunt single by Vogelgesang.
- In the bottom of the third, Andrews tripled, then scored on a wild pitch. Neibauer then doubled, scoring on a Kopicki single shortly after, giving the RedHawks a 14-7 lead.
- In the bottom of the seventh, senior Tyler Wardwell came into pinch hit and hit a solo shot to right-center field, giving the RedHawks a 15-8 lead.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Andrews doubled to lead off the inning. Kopicki then drove him in with an RBI single.
GAME NOTES:
- Brokemond went 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI, three runs scored, and a stolen base.
- Vogelgesang went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
- Neibauer reached base three times, including a double. He also had a steal and three runs scored.
WHAT'S NEXT:
The RedHawks face off against the Bowling Green Falcons on Friday, April 16 to open up a four-game set on the road. The first pitch at Gary Haas Stadium is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Bowling Green.
