RedHawks Notch 3-0 Win Against Rockets

OXFORD, Ohio—It took dramatic come-from-behind wins in the first and third sets for the Miami University volleyball team to claim a 3-0 win against the University of Toledo at Millett Hall on Tuesday night, 27-25, 25-22, 26-24. Miami moves to 7-6 on the season and Mid-American Conference play, while the Rockets drop to 3-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Toledo built a 13-8 lead in the first set. Miami chipped away and closed within 19-18 off a kill by senior Morgan Seaman. The Rockets pushed their lead to 24-19. With set point on the line, Miami dug deep and used kills from Seaman, sophomore Allyson Severance and senior Sarah Wojick to knot the set, 24-24. A kill by the Rockets again put them at set point, but a big block by freshman Abby Stratford, another kill by Wojick and a Rocket attack error handed Miami the come-from-behind win in the opening set, 27-25.
  • Miami used a balanced offensive attack to build a quick 7-2 advantage and led the second set from start to finish. The RedHawks used a 5-0 flurry, sparked by a pair of Severance kills to push ahead 16-9. MU held a 22-16 lead after a senior Avarie Powell kill, but the Rockets climbed back to pull within 22-21. Back-to-back kills by Seaman and junior Gaby Harper cinched the second set for the RedHawks, 25-22.
  • Toledo opened up a 10-6 lead in the third set, but a 4-0 spurt from Miami knotted the set, 10-10. The teams traded punches until the Rockets pushed ahead 20-16. With set point on the line at 24-19, Miami rattled off seven unanswered points that included a pair of Severance service aces to capture the set and the match, 26-24.

NOTES:
  • Powell and Harper led Miami with nine kills apiece. Harper added 11 digs and a service ace, while Powell hit .357 for the match.
  • Severance notched eight kills and two service aces for the RedHawks.
  • Seaman tallied five kills 40 assists and nine digs.
