Miami Earns 11-3 Victory over Davidson

CONWAY, S.C. — Closing out the Baseball at the Beach Tournament, the Miami University baseball team (6-5) defeated Davidson College (5-5) on Sunday, 11-3. The RedHawks scored two in the first, three in the second, and five in the third to give them a commanding lead early on en route to the win against the Wildcats.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the bottom of the first inning, the RedHawks got out to a two-run lead by way of a redshirt freshman Nate Stone sacrifice fly that drove in freshman Dalton Back. Two at-bats later, senior Nate Stolze doubled to left field, driving home graduate student Will Vogelgesang. They finished the first up 2-0.
  • The RedHawks added three more runs to their lead, making it a 5-0 ballgame. A single from redshirt freshman Benji Brokemond drove in senior Tyler Wardwell, who had singled earlier in the inning. Back grounded out to third, allowing senior Michael Morissette to score. Capping off the rally in the second inning was Stone, who collected another RBI, this time on a single to center field that drove home Brokemond.
  • In the bottom of the third, the RedHawks extended their lead even further. A bases-loaded walk to Morissette started things off, making it a 6-0 ballgame. After a pitching change, Brokemond delivered a two-run single, increasing the lead once more. Back had a sacrifice fly to centerfield, allowing Morissette to score, making things 9-0. Vogelgesang singled to centerfield, allowing Brokemond to score, giving the RedHawks a 10-run lead.
  • In the top of the sixth inning, the RedHawks surrendered three runs to Davidson, making it a 10-3 ballgame. This came after a masterful pitching performance by junior starting pitcher Tyler Bosma who gave way to the bullpen. The Wildcats scored three runs on three hits and a walk.
  • As an exclamation point on the win, the RedHawks added one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning after a Morissette double to score junior Nick Neibauer, who had a pinch-hit earlier in the game.

GAME NOTES:

  • Brokemond was 2-for-4 on the day with a double and three RBI for the RedHawks.
  • Stone continued his hot streak going 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBI on the day.
  • Morissette and Stolze both went 1-for-2 with doubles, respectively.
  • Bosma threw five innings, collecting nine strikeouts while allowing just two hits and only walking two opposing hitters.
