OXFORD, Ohio — The No. 20 Miami University field hockey team (7-1) scored in the fourth quarter to tie it up and went through two overtime periods, but a shootout ended up being the determining factor in the non-conference matchup, as No. 2 Louisville (11-3) earned a 2-1 shootout victory on Monday afternoon at the Miami Field Hockey Complex.
The loss was Miami's first of the season, as the 7-0 start for the 'Hawks is the second-best start for a Miami squad. Lexie Nugent tallied the lone goal for Miami, firing off a shot from a penalty corner. Isabelle Perese made four saves in net to keep the game close.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 22:08 (Louisville 1-0) | The Cardinals got the scoring started in the second quarter. Alli Bitting was awarded a penalty corner, and Megan Schnieder got the ball. Emilia Kaczmarczyk took the pass from Schnieder and shot it in.
- 46:01 (Miami 1-1) | Claudia Negrete Garcia received the ball from Jenna Kirby's penalty corner, and Lexie Nugent got her stick on the rebound to tie the game, and bring it into overtime.
- Louisville won the shootout by a 4-2 margin with Charlie van Oirschot scoring the game-winner.
GAME NOTES:
- Louisville outshot Miami 12-5, including 5-4 on shots on goal.
- The Cards also earned an 8-2 advantage on penalty corners.
- The loss was Miami's first in 495 days, when the RedHawks fell to nationally-ranked Stanford, 3-1, in the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
