Field Hockey Moves to 6-0 with Victory at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. — In the last 90 seconds of regulation, freshman Claudia Negrete Garcia scored to lift the Miami University field hockey team past Longwood on Friday afternoon, 2-1, in Farmville.

Longwood (2-2) scored in the first quarter, and Miami (6-0) scored to respond in the second quarter to tie it up. The RedHawks scored the game-winner with just minutes remaining to move to a 6-0 start on the season. In net, sophomore goaltender Isabelle Perese made two saves for her sixth straight victory of her spring season. For Longwood, Madison Nuckols recorded three saves in 60 minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • 12:40 (LU 1-0) | Longwood's Caroline Verhappen got the first goal from a Luna Lopez pass to open up the game scoring in the first quarter.
  • 23:51 (Miami 1-1) | Miami answered in the next frame when Allie Grace Joyner scored to tie it at one. Joyner's goal was her first of the 2021 season.
  • 58:37 (Miami 2-1) | Negrete dribbled the ball in the circle, and ripped it in to give the 'Hawks the road MAC victory with her team-leading fourth of the season.

MIAMI GAME NOTES:

  • The RedHawks out shot the Lancers 11-5 on the day, and also held an advantage of 5-3 on shots on goal. The Lancers led in penalty corners by a 5-4 mark.
  • For Miami, Negrete Garcia and Leonor Berlie both led the RedHawks with two shots on goal each.

UP NEXT:

Miami returns to game action tomorrow with another contest at Longwood. Game time against the Lancers is set for a 2 p.m. start.
