OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University baseball team opened its home schedule with a 9-6 win against the University of Toledo. Five RedHawks had multi-hit games, leading an offensive outburst to propel Miami to the win. The RedHawks improved to 8-7 (1-0 Mid-American Conference), while the Rockets drop to 2-12 (0-1 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the top of the first, the Rockets scored on an RBI single, taking a 1-0 lead. To respond, freshman Dalton Back tripled to right field, driving in sophomore Brian Zapp. Shortly after, redshirt freshman Nate Stone hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Back from third base and giving the RedHawks a 2-1 lead.
- In the bottom of the second inning, junior Mac Hippenhammer hit into a fielder's choice allowing senior Tyler Wardwell to score to put the RedHawks up by two. Toledo quickly answered in the top of the third, cutting the RedHawk lead in half, making it a 3-2 game.
- The offensive showcase continued in the bottom of the third following a two-RBI single by Will Vogelgesang, driving in Stone and Back to give the RedHawks a 5-2 lead.
- In the top of the sixth, the Rockets doubled to left field, scoring a pair and cutting the RedHawk lead to one.
- In the bottom of the sixth, senior Michael Morissette hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring fellow senior Stephen Krause to put the RedHawks up two. Hippenhammer bunted for a single, stole second, and eventually scored on an RBI single by Zapp, giving the RedHawks a 7-4 lead.
- In the bottom of the seventh, senior Nate Stolze tripled to left field, driving in Stone. A few moments later, Wardwell drove Stolze in on an RBI single, putting the RedHawks up, 9-5.
- In the top of the eighth inning, the Rockets scored again, cutting the RedHawk lead to three.
GAME NOTES:
- RedHawks Stone, Zapp, Stolze, Back, and Wardwell all had multi-hit games, each driving in a run.
- Vogelgesang continued his strong hitting, going 1-for-3 with two RBI.
