OXFORD, Ohio—After dropping the first two sets, the Miami University volleyball team dug deep and rallied to snatch the next three and claim the 20-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-11 come-from-behind victory over the Ohio University Bobcats on Saturday night at Millett Hall. Miami moves to 8-7 on the season and in Mid-American Conference play, while the Bobcats drop to 6-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Ohio pushed ahead to a 17-12 lead in the opening set, but Miami used a 7-1 run that included two kills from freshman Maggie McCrary and service aces from senior Morgan Seaman and junior Gaby Harper to claim a 19-18 advantage. Miami posted a 20-19 edge on a junior Sophie Riemersma kill, but the Bobcats rattled off six-straight points to take the first set, 25-20.
- Miami took an early 5-2 lead in the second set. The Bobcats used a 13-2 run to post a 15-7 advantage and did not look back as Ohio took the second set, 25-16.
- The RedHawks took a quick 7-3 lead in the third set with help from a trio of kills by Riemersma. The Bobcats came back to tie the set at 15-15, but the RedHawks pushed ahead 21-16, sparked by two kills each from McCrary and senior Sarah Wojick. Ohio scored four unanswered to close within 21-20 of Miami. Two kills from Wojick helped Miami outscore Ohio 4-2 down the stretch to take the third set, 25-22.
- The teams battled back and forth in a gritty fourth set with neither leading by more than two points until kills from senior Avarie Powell and Harper along with two from Severance handed Miami a 21-18 advantage. Two kills from Serverance down the stretch helped Miami take a 25-21 win in the fourth set to send the match to a deciding set.
- A pair of kills from Wojick and a service ace by senior Abigail Huser lifted Miami to an early 6-2 lead in the fifth set and eventually the RedHawks pushed their lead to 11-6. The Bobcats closed within two twice, the last coming 13-11, but a kill from Wojick and a big block by Powell and Riemersma handed the RedHawks the 15-11 win in the fifth set.
NOTES:
- Wojick paced the RedHawks with 16 kills and hit .306 for the match. She added four blocks and two service aces to the winning effort.
- Riemersma was the other RedHawks in double figures for kills with 13.
- Huser notched 15 digs to pace Miami.
- Seaman notched 49 assists, 12 digs, three blocks and two service aces.
- McCrary led Miami with five blocks.
