MUNCIE, Ind.—The Miami University volleyball team dropped a three-set match at Ball State on Tuesday night, 23-25, 20-25, 18-25. Miami's record evens to 8-8 overall and in Mid-American Conference play, while the Cardinals move to 7-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Ball State led from start to finish in the first set. Back-to-back service aces by senior Avarie Powell helped Miami close within 9-8 of BSU. The Cardinals eventually pushed their lead to seven. With set point on the line at 24-21, kills from sophomore Allyson Severance and senior Sarah Wojick helped Miami close within one late, 24-23. A BSU kill, however, handed the Cardinals the first set, 25-23.
- Two kills from Severance and block from Powell helped Miami to an early 6-3 lead in the second set. BSU came back to tie the set at 8-8, and the teams went back and forth with neither team leading by more than two until late in the stanza. After a BSU attack error put Miami within one, 21-20, the Cardinals scored the final four points to take the second set, 25-20.
- A kill by junior Gaby Harper and block from Powell and senior Morgan Seaman put Miami up 2-0 in the third set. The Cardinals then went on a 10-2 run to push ahead and eventually extended their lead to double figures. The RedHawks closed within six late, but BSU took the third set and the match, 25-18.
NOTES:
- Harper tallied eight kills, seven digs and three service aces.
- Wojick recorded eight kills and three blocks.
- Severance had seven kills and nine digs.
- Powell posted seven kills and two service aces.
- Senior Abigail Huser notched 13 digs.
- Seaman notched 22 assists.
