Miami Dominates in Win over Memphis, 9-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Miami University baseball team kicked off their weekend in Memphis, Tennessee, in convincing fashion. The RedHawks (7-5) defeated the University of Memphis Tigers (4-7) in the first of a three-game series with a 9-0 victory. The RedHawks got out to an early lead, tallying six runs in the first three innings and never looked back.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The RedHawks struck first in the top of the first inning after freshman Dalton Back doubled to drive home redshirt freshman Benji Brokemond. Redshirt freshman Nate Stone followed that up with a sacrifice fly to increase the RedHawks' lead over the Tigers to 2-0 in the top half of the first inning.
  • In their second chance at the plate, the RedHawks pulled away even further, adding three runs in the top of the second inning to make it 5-0. The first run of the inning came from senior Michael Morissette, who delivered an RBI single followed by another double from Back, driving in two Miami hitters.
  • A bases-loaded walk to sophomore Brian Zapp added another run in the top of the third inning, extending the RedHawk lead to 6-0 over the Tigers.
  • In the top half of the sixth inning, the RedHawks continued to extend their lead, making it 7-0 after Brokemond's sacrifice fly brought Zapp in from third base.
  • Mmiami extended its lead to 8-0 in the top of the seventh inning. This time it was graduate senior Will Vogelgesang who hit a solo home run.
  • The RedHawks were not done, though. In the top of the ninth inning, a pinch-hit double from freshman Nick Clark scored Vogelgesang to make it a 9-0 ballgame.

GAME NOTES:

  • Senior Grant Hartwig pitched seven shutout innings, allowing only five hits, walking three, and striking out three Tigers hitters for the win.
  • Graduate senior Kevin Napoleon preserved the shutout, throwing two perfect innings, striking out three opposing hitters.
