MIAMI, Fla.—Thirteen runs over the ninth and 10
th innings catapulted the Miami University baseball team to a thrilling 15-6 come-from-behind triumph at Florida International University on Sunday afternoon. Miami pounded out nine of their 16 hits over the final two innings en route to the win. The RedHawks (5-3) split the four-game weekend series with the Panthers (4-3).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a scoreless first inning, FIU took a 6-0 lead, scoring runs in the second, third and fourth innings.
- Graduate senior Will Vogelgesang singled to right field to plate junior Mac Hippenhammer and put Miami on the board in the fifth inning. Redshirt freshman Nate Stone then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, which scored redshirt freshman Benji Brokemond to close the gap to 6-2.
- A four-run ninth inning knotted the game for the RedHawks. Brokemond singled to start the inning and scored on a walk after Panther pitchers loaded the bases. Senior Nate Stolze singled to plate freshman Dalton Back. Vogelgesang scored on a walk, while a sacrifice fly by freshman Nick Clark plated Stone to make the score 6-6 and eventually send the game to extra innings.
- A Vogelgesang double scored Brokemond for the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning before Stone blasted a three-run shot that also plated Vogelgesang and Dalton to hand Miami a 10-6 lead. A two-run homer by redshirt sophomore Stephen Krause that also scored Stolze furthered the RedHawk lead.
- Singles by Brokemond and Vogelgesang plated senior Cristian Tejada and Hippenhammer to continue the blistering 10th inning for the RedHawks. Brokemond scored the final run when Stone was hit by a pitch to give Miami a commanding 15-6 win.
NOTES:
- Senior right-hander Michael Spinozzi finished out the game for Miami, throwing 6.2 innings, giving up just one hit to the 22 batters he faced while sitting down eight to earn the win on the mound.
- Brokemond was 4-for-6 at the plate with four runs and one RBI for the RedHawks.
- Vogelgesang and Stolze each went 3-for-6 at the plate with Vogelgesang scoring two runs and collecting three RBI, while Stolze notched one run and one RBI.
- Stone went 2-for-3 with five RBI and two runs.
