RedHawks Take Flight for 5 p.m. Tuesday Game at CMU

TUESDAY'S GAME: The RedHawks embark on a three-game stretch over five days when the RedHawks travel to Central Michigan for a 5 p.m. game on Tuesday, Feb. 23. This game was rescheduled from a previously postponed game in January. This is the lone game between Miami and Central Michigan during the regular season.

ABOUT CENTRAL MICHIGAN: The Chippewas enter Tuesday's game with a 6-12 overall record and a 2-9 Mid-American Conference mark. Tuesday's game marks CMU's first since Feb. 6 having their last four games postponed. Travon Broadway, Jr. leads the team with 17.9 ppg and added 5.4 rpg. Meikkel Murray follows at 14.2 ppg and 6.0 rpg. Caleb Huffman is the other Chippewa averaging double figures in scoring at 11.6 ppg. As a team, CMU ranks second in the MAC in steals, averaging 8.67 per game on the season. Devontae Lane ranks second in the MAC, averaging 2.06 steals per game, while Malik Muhammad ranks third among MAC leaders in blocked shots per game (1.29).

THE SERIES WITH THE CHIPPEWAS: Tuesday marks the 77th meeting between Miami and Central Michigan with the RedHawks owning a 54-22 lead in the all-time series. When playing in Mount Pleasant, Miami is 25-13. The RedHawks won the last meeting between the teams, a 76-57 win in Oxford on Feb. 27, 2020. CMU took the last meeting between the teams in McGuirk Arena on Jan. 4, 2020, 93-71. Miami's last win in Mount Pleasant was on Jan. 23, 2018, 70-61.

TELEVISION: Tuesday's game will be televised on ESPN3 or ESPN+.

RADIO: In its second year of its partnership with Van Wagner, the Miami Sports Network, powered by Pepsi, continues its coverage of Miami Basketball with a group of affiliates blanketing most of Southwest Ohio and Southeast Indiana. ROAD WARRIORS: Miami is logging the miles, approximately 2,602 miles, as it rounds out its regular season. With rescheduled make-up games from earlier postponements, Miami now plays six of its last seven regular-season games on the road, including a four-game road stretch that started at Toledo on Tuesday, Feb. 16.

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF CHARITY: Miami continues to get stronger at the free-throw line, ranking third in the MAC and 24th nationally in free-throw percentage (.774) and is first in conference-only games (.788). Over Miami's last 11 games, the RedHawks have shot 70.0 percent or better from the charity stripe and have shot 75.0 percent or better in eight of their last nine. In its last four games, Miami has shot 80 percent or better from the free-throw line in each contest.

FREE-THROW LEADERS: Three RedHawks rank among the top 15 in the conference in free-throw shooting on the season with sophomore guard Dae Dae Grant ranking third (.881), senior forward Dalonte Brown ranking sixth (.854) and junior guard Mekhi Lairy ranking 14th (.789). Grant leads the MAC in conference-only games in free-throw percentage (.917), while Brown ties for third (.892).

COLEMAN-LANDS RANKS 24TH NATIONALLY IN ASSIST/TURNOVER RATIO: Redshirt junior guard Isaiah Coleman-Lands has been stingy with turnovers and currently boasts a 2.89 assist/turnover ratio with 52 assists to 18 turnovers through 17 games. He leads the MAC and ranks 24th nationally in assist/turnover ratio. 

REDHAWKS RANK 17TH NATIONALLY FEWEST TURNOVERS: Averaging 10.7 turnovers per game, Miami ranks second the MAC in fewest turnovers and ranks 17th nationally. Miami has committed fewer turnovers than its opponent in 10 of its 18 games and the same number in four games this season. The RedHawks have had 10 or fewer turnovers in 10 of their 18 games, including a season-low four against Mount St. Joseph on Dec. 11.

BROWN REACHES 1,000 CAREER POINTS: Senior forward Dalonte Brown became the 37th member of Miami's 1,000 Point Club on Jan. 12, 2021. Brown enters Miami's next game with 1,140 career points and has moved up to 29th on the list. 

MORE ON BROWN: Dalonte Brown played in his 100th career game on Tuesday, Dec. 15 against Buffalo. He made his 100th career start against Toledo on Tuesday, Jan. 26. Entering Miami's next game, Brown has played in 113 career games and made 104 career starts.

  • Senior guard Milos Jovic joined the Century Club on Jan. 30 against Western Michigan, playing in his 100th career game. Entering the RedHawks' next game, Jovic has played in 104 career games.
  • The RedHawks have had balanced contributions from their starters and their bench. In its 13 MAC game, Miami is getting 30.4 percent of its scoring off the bench while averaging 73.3 ppg.
  • With 26 points at Northern Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 20, sophomore guard Dae Dae Grant notched his fourth 20-point scoring effort of the season and now has the top three scoring efforts for Miami this season. Grant also scored 28 points at Eastern Michigan on Jan. 23 and 27 points against Bowling Green on Jan. 21.
  • Senior forward Dalonte Brown posted back-to-back double doubles in Miami's two games last week. Brown scored 21 points and hauled in 11 rebounds at Toledo and tallied 16 points and 12 rebounds at Northern Illinois. He has five of the RedHawks' double-doubles this season.
ROARING 20s: In Miami's last four games, four different RedHawks have eclipsed 20 points in scoring with two notching career-high scoring efforts both of 24 points. 
  • Junior forward James Beck came off the bench at Buffalo on Feb. 6 and poured in a career-high 24 points off 10-of-14 shooting from the floor, connecting on a sizzling 71.4 percent of his shots. He was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and added eight rebounds, one assist, one steal and one blocked shot to his line in 25:41 of action. 
  • Junior guard Mekhi Lairy amassed a career-high 24 points against Akron on Feb. 12, tallying 12 points in each half. Lairy knocked down 8-of 14 field goals (.571) and was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. He added three assists, three rebounds and a steal to his stat line.
  • Senior forward Dalonte Brown tallied a season-best 21 points off 6-of-10 shooting from the field, including a 3-for-7 effort from three-point range at Toledo on Feb. 16. He also sunk all six free throws. He added 11 rebounds and two steals to his line.
  • Sophomore guard Dae Dae Grant recorded 26 points off 8-of-18 shooting, including a 4-of-10 effort from 3-point range, while knocking down 6-of-7 free-throw attempts at Northern Illinois on Feb. 20. He added six rebounds and an assist.
UP NEXT: Miami rounds out a grueling four-game road stint and continues a three-game, five-day stretch when the RedHawks travel to Western Michigan for a noon game on Thursday, Feb. 25. Miami returns home for its final game of the season in Millett Hall when the RedHawks host Kent State at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27.
