TOLEDO, Ohio – For the past two weeks the Miami University women's basketball team leaned heavily on sophomore guard
Peyton Scott, but on Wednesday night, it was
Kelly McLaughlin's and
Katie Davidson's time to shine as the RedHawks downed the Toledo Rockets 62-60 on Wednesday night inside Savage Hall.
McLaughlin had her third double-double of the season with 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Red and White. Davidson added 21 points, including 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Scott, who came into Wednesday's contest averaging 35.0 points per game over her past four games, had just seven points while battling foul trouble most of the second half.
The win improves Miami to 3-17 overall and 2-14 in Mid-American Conference play. Toledo falls to 9-10 overall and 5-10 in the MAC.
How it Happened:
- Miami used an outstanding defensive effort in the first quarter to race out to a 22-7 advantage over the Rockets. In the first quarter Miami forced five turnovers while holding UT to just 2-for-12 shooting after 10 minutes of play.
- A Davidson triple gave Miami its biggest lead of the half, 36-13, with three minutes to play. Miami went to the locker room with a 36-19 advantage, its sixth game in a row leading at halftime.
- Toledo cut the lead to 42-30, but freshman Jada Duckett grabbed an offensive rebound and converted a three-point play to put Miami up 45-30 late in the third. Miami led 45-32 entering the final stanza.
- With Scott on the bench to begin the fourth quarter with four fouls, UT cut the lead to 47-37 with eight minutes to play, but that is where McLaughlin took over. The senior record a put back as the shot clock expired and scored six of Miami's next nine points, pushing Miami to a 58-40 advantage with 4:30 to play.
- Toledo connected on a deep three pointer to make it a 60-52 game with one minute to play and got to within five with 20 seconds to go, but even a three pointer at the buzzer would not be enough as the RedHawks came away with a 62-60 win.
Due to software stat issues at Toledo, stats will not be available until later.
