RedHawks Drop Heart-Breaker to Cardinals, 79-77

OXFORD, Ohio – Peyton Scott matched a Millett Hall record with 39 points, but the Miami University women's basketball team dropped a 79-77 decision on Saturday afternoon to the Ball State Cardinals. Miami is now 2-17 overall and 1-14 in Mid-American Conference play. Ball State moves to 10-8 overall and 8-6 in MAC play.

Scott was joined in double figures by Abbey Hoff (13) and Kelly McLaughlin (11). Scott had a team-high four assists, while McLaughlin led the team with nine rebounds.

How it Happened:
  • Scott scored 14 points in the first quarter to give Miami an 18-14 advantage after one quarter of play.
  • Ball State knotted the score at 22 apiece early in the second, but an Abbey Hoff triple from the corner followed by back-to-back layups from Scott and McLaughlin pushed Miami's lead to 29-22 midway through the second stanza.
  • After Scott beat the shot clock on a pull-up three-pointer to garner a 32-22 lead, the Cardinals closed on a 6-0 run in the last two minutes of the half to send Miami to the locker room with a 32-28 advantage. Miami has now led at halftime in five-straight games.
  • Ball State secured a 42-40 lead, its first lead since early in the first quarter, with four minutes left in the third. Hoff answered with a pair of triples in a span of 31 seconds to regain a four-point advantage for the Red and White.
  • The Cardinals once again cut the lead to a single possession near the end of the third, but a Scott triple to end the quarter gave Miami a 52-47 advantage as the teams entered the fourth quarter.
  • Just as Ball State closed to within 56-54, Katie Davidson converted a three-point play and Kenzie Schmitz drilled a three-pointer to give Miami a 64-57 with 6:49 remaining. Schmitz made her second three of the quarter and Scott added a bucket from behind the arc as Miami led 70-59 with 5:40 to play.
  • Ball State tied the game at 73-73 with 1:53 to go. Moments later Scott drove to the hole and converted a three-point play to give Miami a 76-73 advantage.
  • Ball State finished the game on 6-1 run and Scott's triple at the buzzer was just short as the Cardinals came away with a 79-77 win.

Game Notes:
  • Peyton Scott's 39 points matches a Millett Hall record. Courtney Osborn scored 39 back on March 9, 2013 versus Ohio.
  • Scott has now scored at least 30 points in four-straight games. Her 15 made field goals is also a school record. She was also 5-of-9 from behind the arc, which is a career-high.
