Softball Drops a Pair to Open Season at No. 20 Mississippi State

STARKSVILLE, Miss. – The Miami University softball team, behind first-year head coach Kirin Kumar, dropped a pair of contests on Saturday afternoon to the No. 20-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs as the RedHawks opened their 2021 campaign. Miami fell 10-9 in game one to the Bulldogs and followed that up with a 10-3 loss in part two of the double header.
 
Karlee Juarez went 4-for-7 on the day with five RBI, while Mackenzie Moore had three hits and drove in two runs on Friday.
 
How it Happened (Game One):
  • Starting pitcher Courtney Vierstra struggled to find the strike zone in the first inning, walking four batters in the first, as MSU took a 4-0 lead after one inning of play.
  • Juarez cut the deficit in half with a two-run homerun in the top of the third down the right field line.
  • The Bulldogs took a 7-2 advantage in the bottom of the fourth following a three-run homer.
  • Miami scored seven runs in the fifth behind RBI hits from Juarez, Morgan Lott, Jada Dotson and Moore to lead 9-7.
  • Mississippi State added one run in the sixth to trail 9-8. Down to their final out, the Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to come away with a 10-9 victory.
 
How it Happened (Game Two):
  • Much like game one, the Bulldogs got off to a quick start, scoring three runs in the first.
  • Kate Kobayashi recorded her first career homerun as a RedHawk, a two-run blast in the top of the third.
  • MSU added a run in the second and two more in the third. Juarez singled to right to score Kobayashi in the top of the fifth, but MSU added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the contest.
 
 
Up Next:
Miami returns to action on Sunday to complete the three-game series with the Bulldogs. Opening pitch is slated for 12:30 p.m.
