RedHawks Stun No. 9 Omaha With Two Late Goals

OMAHA, Neb. — Miami scored a pair of goals 19 seconds apart late in the third period to stun No. 9/7 Omaha 4-3 in the NCHC opener for both teams Friday night. The RedHawks (2-4-1) survived a first-minute goal from UNO (7-2-0) and then rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the final five minutes to snap the Mavericks' seven-game winning streak.

Matt Barry and Thomas Daskas scored in the opening period for Miami, with Matthew Barbolini and Derek Daschke doing the honors down the stretch. Barbolini's goal with 4:25 left in the third period knotted things at 3-3, and Daschke scored on the next shift to give Miami its first win over a top-10 team since February 12, 2021.

Ludvig Persson made 32 saves in goal for the RedHawks, while Miami needed just 13 shots on goal to find the back of the net four times. MU scored on its only power play of the night and killed off all four of UNO's man advantages.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 0:52 1st (Omaha 1-0) | The Mavericks jumped out to a quick lead in the first minute as Kevin Conley dropped the puck off for Brock Bremer, who managed to tip in a shot as he skated around the cage. Jimmy Glynn also picked up an assist on the play for UNO.
  • 5:45 1st (Miami 1-1) | The RedHawks responded with a goal on the night's first power play. Derek Daschke fed Michael Regush, whose diagonal pass found Matt Barry for a backdoor one-timer to knot the score at 1-1.
  • 9:51 1st (Miami 2-1) | Miami took its first lead as Robby Drazner took a pass from John Sladic and ripped a shot from the blue line that Thomas Daskas finished off in front of Mavericks goalie Isaiah Saville.
  • 6:52 2nd (Omaha 2-2) | Moments after nearly scoring to tie the game, Omaha's Tyler Weiss left no doubt with a backhand goal on a 2-on-2 break, taking the puck off the stick of Taylor Ward and stuffing it home.
  • 7:54 3rd (Omaha 3-2) | Weiss gave the Mavericks another lead by knifing between a trio of RedHawks defenders from the blue line and scoring his second goal of the night off an assist from Kirby Proctor.
  • 15:35 3rd (Miami 3-3) | Although Miami was still trailing heading to the last media timeout, the RedHawks finished the game with a flurry. A textbook give-and-go with Matthew Barbolini and Monte Graham provided the equalizer for MU, as Barbolini's first goal of the season drastically changed the momentum of the game. Jack Olmstead had the second assist on the play.
  • 15:54 3rd (Miami 4-3) | Only 19 seconds later, Daschke fired a shot from the blue line for the game-winning goal, assisted by Jack Clement and Red Savage.
