Miami Hosts Defiance Tuesday to Round Out Home Stretch

TUESDAY'S GAME: Off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 1998-99, Miami hosts Defiance College at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23 to cap a four-game home stand. The RedHawks are coming off a 90-45 win against Heidelberg on Saturday.

ABOUT DEFIANCE: The Yellow Jackets enter the week with a 1-3 mark with a win over Maranatha Baptist to open the season. They play at Penn St. Shenango on Monday night. Marell Jordan leads the team, averaging 25.0 ppg and 7.5 rpg.

THE SERIES WITH THE YELLOW JACKETS: This is the third meeting with Defiance with the RedHawks holding a 2-0 lead in the all-time series. Both previous meetings came in Oxford in the late 1940s with Miami taking the first meeting between the teams 72-40 on Dec. 4, 1947, and the last meeting on Dec. 7, 1948, 75-32.

UP NEXT: Miami hits the road for a game at Western Illinois at 3 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Nov. 27. The game will be streamed on Western Illinois' All-Access platform. There will be no Miami radio broadcast of the game.

TELEVISION: Tuesday's game will be aired on ESPN3. Steve Baker and Randy Hollowell will call the action.

DAE DAE DOING A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING: Junior guard Dae Dae Grant is scoring a team-best 17.3 ppg this season, one of four RedHawks averaging double figures, while shooting 50.0% from the field. Grant is coming off an eight-assist effort against Heidelberg and leads the MAC in assist/turnover ratio while owning team bests of 18 assists and 11 triples. He also is averaging 4.5 rpg. 

CHART CLIMBER: Senior forward Dalonte Brown is climbing several Miami career top-10 lists and continues to climb the points scored list. Here is where he stands entering Miami's next game:

1,000 POINT WATCH: Entering the RedHawks' next game with 811 career points, senior guard Mekhi Lairy could become the 38th member of the 1,000 Point Club.Lairy is averaging 13.8 ppg to start the season and would reach the milestone in January at his current pace.

WHITE RANKS SEVENTH NATIONALLY IN 3-POINT PERCENTAGE: Junior guard Myja White ranks seventh nationally in 3-point field goal percentage, knocking down a sizzling 62.5 percent of his triples. He is coming off a career-high 17-point performance against Heidelberg where he went 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.

PRECIOUS MOMENTS: Senior forward Precious Ayah matched his scoring career high in the first half alone on Nov. 17, pouring in 12 of his 18 points before intermission. He is coming off a 10-point scoring effort Saturday and shot a scorching 85.7 percent from the floor last week, missing just two field goals on 14 attempts over two games. Ayah is averaging 11.3 points through four games this year

CENTURY CLUB: Senior forward Dalonte Brown is already a member of Miami's Century Club for games played (122). Three other RedHawks are closing in on joining him: senior forward Precious Ayah (97), senior guard Isaiah Coleman-Lands (97), senior guard Mekhi Lairy (91).

RAINING THREES: Twice this season, Miami has reached double digits for 3-pointers, including a 13-trey effort against Heidelberg on Nov. 20. Miami poured on the triples in its 104-75 win against Lamar (Nov. 13), draining 12 in the first half on the way to a 17-trey effort against the Cardinals, which ties for second on the RedHawks' single-game list. MU shot 60.0 percent from long range against Lamar in the opening half and 53.1 percent for the game.

  • Senior guard Isaiah Coleman-Lands currently leads the MAC in assists/game (5.25) and total assists (21), while senior forward Dalonte Brown leads the MAC in free-throw percentage (.938), junior guard Myja White leads the way in 3-point field goal percentage (.625), junior Dae Dae Grant ranks first in assist/turnover ratio (3.60) and senior forward Precious Ayah ranks first in total steals (8).
  • Miami ranks among the top five in the MAC in 27 statistical categories and leads the league in assists, assists/game, assist/turnover ratio, 3-pointers per game and 3-point field goal percentage.

  • Miami returners accounted for 97.1 percent of Miami's scoring and 94.7 percent of its rebound from a season ago.

ROAD STREAKS: After its 72-69 win at Georgia Tech on Nov. 9, Miami extended its road win streak to five-straight dating back to the 2020-21 season. Last year, MU captured a 69-64 win at Northern Illinois (Feb. 20), a 96-54 win at Central Michigan (Feb. 23), a 74-66 win at Western Michigan (Feb. 25) and an 84-79 overtime win at Bowling Green on Mar. 2 last season. It was the first time since 2008-09 Miami had won four-straight road games. The RedHawks were 5-6 in road contests last season.
