No. 11 Denver Downs Miami 7-1

DENVER, Colo. — No. 11/12 Denver scored four second-period goals to break the game open in a 7-1 victory over Miami Saturday night. The Pioneers (8-4-0, 4-2-0 NCHC) used a pair of shorthanded goals to improve to 7-0-0 at home on the season, while the RedHawks (2-9-1, 1-5-0 NCHC) dropped their fifth straight game.

Mike Benning and Carter King each had three points to lead DU. Carter Mazur and Connor Caponi scored two goals apiece for the Pioneers. Jack Olmstead had the RedHawks' lone goal, and Logan Neaton made 41 saves in the Miami net.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 10:09 1st (Denver 1-0) | Carter Mazur picked up the puck in his own zone and carried it all the way to the other end, where he was able to slide between Miami defenders and open the scoring. Reid Irwin and Antti Tuomisto had the assists.
  • 6:10 2nd (Denver 2-0) | The Pioneers doubled their advantage with a shorthanded goal. McKade Webster and Carter King executed a 2-on-1 give-and-go to perfection, with Sean Behrens also earning an assist on Webster's goal.
  • 8:56 2nd (Denver 3-0) | Mazur tallied his second goal of the night, as Mike Benning sent the puck diagonally through the crease and it found Mazur's stick for a deflection past Neaton. Massimo Rizzo added an assist.
  • 13:32 2nd (Denver 4-0) | DU flooded the Miami zone with numbers, capitalizing as Connor Caponi poked home a rebound off assists from Webster and King.
  • 15:44 2nd (Denver 5-0) | Just over two minutes later, Denver struck again on a rebound, with Benning cleaning up after an attempt by Bobby Brink. Cole Guttman got an assist on the play as well.
  • 2:05 3rd (Miami 5-1) | Monte Graham made a good play in front of DU goaltender Magnus Chrona to knock the puck loose, and Jack Olmstead did the rest, circling around to the point and ripping a deep shot to get the Red and White on the scoreboard. Dylan Moulton had the other assist.
  • 13:25 3rd (Denver 6-1) | Brink skated around the back of the cage and used an effective backhand to give the Pioneers their first score of the period, assisted by Carter Savoie and Benning.
  • 18:59 3rd (Denver 7-1) | King got loose on the penalty kill off a feed from Shai Buium, skating around the MU defense and sliding a perfect pass across to Caponi for Denver's second shorthanded goal of the night.
