LIU Takes Down Miami 7-4

OXFORD, Ohio -  Despite Ryan Savage's two goals, Miami fell to visiting Long Island University 7-4 Friday night in the first game of a non-conference weekend series. LIU took a commanding lead after the first period, outscoring the RedHawks 4-1. Miami almost caught up with goals in the second and third period, but the Sharks held strong and extended their lead further. The loss drops the RedHawks to 2-10-1 on the season and moves LIU up to 4-7-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 4:33 1st (LIU 1-0) | LIU came out swinging, picking up the first goal of the game in under five minutes. A holding penalty called on Miami put the Sharks on the power play, quickly resulting in a pass from Jake Stevens to Spencer Cox, who made a play for the goal that was deflected by Ludvig Persson. The puck fell to Persson's left, with Tyler Welsh swooping in to tap the puck in and give LIU an early lead.
  • 4:51 1st (Miami 1-1) | Miami responded 18 seconds later to get on the board. After winning the faceoff and driving the puck into LIU territory, Scott Corbett sent it to Monte Graham, whose deflected shot on goal drew the Sharks' goalie away. This allowed Ryan Savage to sneak in and slam in the tying goal for Miami.
  • 8:26 1st (LIU 2-1) | The Sharks would soon retaliate with another goal of their own. After recovering the puck from Miami and moving down the ice, a pass from Carter Ekberg to Marty Westhaver put the Sharks in position for a shot from Jack Quinn to sneak into the goal, putting LIU back in the lead.
  • 17:31 1st (LIU 3-1) | A tripping call against the Sharks put Miami on the power play, but it was LIU who would end up benefiting. An interception allowed the Sharks to move the puck into the RedHawks' territory, killing the penalty in the process. After a quick succession of shots, a pass from PJ Marrocco to Zack Bross put Persson on the ground and away from the goal, leading to Isaiah Fox finding the goal and extending the lead for the Sharks.
  • 19:04 1st (LIU 4-1) | LIU struck one final time before the period expired. A deflected shot forced the Sharks to move back and find another opening, changing the puck between Billy Jerry and Stevens. It soon found its way to Marrocco, who sent a shot toward the net that bounced over Miami defenders and in with just under a minute to go in the period.
  • 11:23 2nd (Miami 4-2) | Miami was able to make some noise in an otherwise quiet second period, chipping away at LIU's lead with another goal. After going on the power play due to an interference call, the RedHawks moved into Sharks territory, with Derek Daschke setting up Chase Gresock for a blast that Matthew Barbolini was able to redirect past Kris Carlson.
  • 10:29 3rd (Miami 4-3) | The RedHawks continued inching toward LIU with a goal halfway through the third period. Dylan Moulton and Jack Clement moved the puck around in Sharks territory, setting up Barry for a pass that he sent rocketing into the net for his second point of the night.
  • 13:12 3rd (LIU 5-3) | LIU finally responded with its first goal since the opening period. After moving into the Miami zone, Quinn sent the puck to Dylan Schuett, who barreled toward the goal. Persson wound up injured and on the ground just before Schuett knocked the puck in, running into the net in the process. The goal was confirmed after review, and Logan Neaton came on in relief of Persson.
  • 16:01 3rd (LIU 6-3) | The Sharks claimed another goal shortly after, benefiting from a power play after a tripping penalty was called on Miami. LIU passed the puck around RedHawks territory, from Cox to Jerry and finally to Welsh, who was able to slip it past Neaton.
  • 18:46 3rd (Miami 6-4) | Miami returned fire only a few minutes later. Moving decisively into LIU territory, Thomas Daskas sent the puck to Matthew Barbolini, with Ryan Savage receiving it after to bounce a shot off the goalpost and in for his second score of the evening.
  • 19:51 3rd (LIU 7-4) | LIU grabbed one final goal to end the game, with Marrocco picking up the puck in Sharks territory and sending it into Miami's empty net.
