DENVER, Colo. — Massimo Rizzo scored a goal and added two assists as No. 11/12 Denver defeated Miami 4-1 Friday night to remain unbeaten at home this season. The Pioneers (7-4-0, 3-2-0 NCHC) used two second-period goals to break a 1-1 deadlock and take control, adding a power-play goal in the final period to extend the margin. The RedHawks (2-8-1, 1-4-0 NCHC) dropped their fourth straight game, all to nationally ranked teams.
Dylan Moulton scored on a first-period power play for MU, giving Miami a goal on the man advantage for a sixth consecutive game.
Ludvig Persson made 32 saves for the Red and White.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 3:36 1st (Denver 1-0) | Carter Mazur won the puck along the end boards and circled all the way around to the top of the zone before firing in the first goal of the game. Cameron Wright and Massimo Rizzo had assists on the play.
- 8:32 1st (Miami 1-1) | One minute into the RedHawks' first power play of the game, Joe Cassetti cleanly won a faceoff and fed the puck back to Dylan Moulton, who blasted it home, all in the span of three seconds.
- 5:37 2nd (Denver 2-1) | The Pioneers returned the favor in the second period with a nearly identical play, as a faceoff win on the power play led directly to Rizzo's goal. Shai Buium passed the puck around the top, Mike Benning fired it at the goal, and Rizzo was in the right place to quickly finish off the rebound.
- 13:48 2nd (Denver 3-1) | After Cole Guttman hit the right goalpost with a shot, Bobby Brink poked the rebound across the crease for Carter Savoie to tap in. Miami challenged the play for possible goaltender interference, but the initial call on the ice ultimately stood after video review.
- 7:47 3rd (Denver 4-1) | Buium and Rizzo both picked up their second assists of the night, as Buium freed the puck from the boards and sent it over to Brett Stapley for a power-play goal past Persson to finish the scoring.
