CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – After falling behind 40-22 at the half, the Miami University women's basketball team outscored Illinois University 43-32 the last 20 minutes of the contest, but fell just short, 72-65 on Sunday afternoon. Illinois improves to 2-0 on the year while the RedHawks fall to 1-1 on the year.
Peyton Scott threatened a triple-double, finishing with 22 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
Maddi Cluse added 12 points and 10 rebounds and
Ivy Wolf chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds. Miami outrebounded Illinois 47-33, finishing the game with 17 offensive rebounds.
How It Happened:
- Illinois raced out to a 12-2 advantage before the RedHawks scored the game's next eight points, highlighted by buckets from Scott and Jada Duckett. The Illini led 18-12 after 10 minutes of play.
- UI opened the second quarter on a 12-2 run, but a triple by Scott and a layup from Tajah Foster-Walker cut the deficit to 35-22, but Illinois closed the second quarter on a 5-0 run and led 40-22 at the half.
- Amani Freeman converted on a pair of buckets as the RedHawks scored the first eight points of the third to trail 40-30 early in the second half. In all, Miami outscored Illinois 22-11 in the third quarter and trailed 51-44 entering the fourth.
- Miami closed the gap, 56-50, but following a missed Miami layup, Illinois came down the court and drained a triple to extend its lead to 59-50. Ivy Wolf answered with a triple of her own and Peyton Scott converted on a pair of free throws to make it 59-54 with 5:14 to play.
- An outstanding dribble-drive from Wolf shrunk Illinois' lead to 63-59 with 2:14 to play, but the RedHawks could get no closer.
Game Notes:
- Maddi Cluse recorded a career-high in points (12) and rebounds (10) for her first double-double of her career.
