RedHawks Seize Three-Set Win Against Chippewas

OXFORD, Ohio—Propelled by a complete team effort, the Miami University volleyball team (4-16; 2-8 Mid-American Conference) hammered out a three-set win against the Central Michigan University Chippewas (9-13; 3-7 MAC) on Friday night at Millett Hall, 25-19, 25-18, 25-22. The RedHawks had a mere three attack errors on the night on their way to a .339 hitting percentage and amassed 6.0 blocks as a team.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Miami used a 5-1 surge to open up a 7-3 lead early in the first set. The Chippewas closed within one, 10-9, but a trio of kills from senior Sophie Riemersma and a pair of kills from senior Gaby Harper helped push the RedHawk lead to 17-12. CMU closed within two late in the set, but Miami finished off the stanza on a 4-0 spurt that included a service ace by freshman Margo Lawson and a big block from freshman Lydia Harper and sophomore Maggie McCrary to seize the opening set, 25-19.
  • The RedHawks took an early 4-1 lead but CMU came back to knot the set at four apiece. Miami used a 7-0 run, sparked by a pair of Riemersma kills, to notch a 13-6 advantage and rolled to a 25-18 win in the second set. The RedHawks hit an aggressive .412 for the set, with just one attack error on 34 attempts.
  • It was a back-and-forth battle in the third set. Miami used a 3-0 spurt punctuated by a service ace from Gaby Harper to notch a 10-7 lead and again notched a three-point advantage off a Lydia Harper service ace, 13-10. The teams continued to trade punches until a block from McCrary and sophomore Abby Stratford and a huge solo block from McCrary down the stretch iced the match for the RedHawks with a 25-22 win in the third set.

NOTES:
  • McCrary led all players with five blocks (1 solo; 4 assist), while Stratford added three.
  • Gaby Harper and Riemersma each tallied a team-leading 11 kills. Harper also posted 14 digs.
  • Lydia Harper notched 35 assists, 11 digs, two blocks and two kills for the Red and White.
