OXFORD, Ohio— In the second match-up in as many days, the Miami University volleyball team (5-16; 3-8 Mid-American Conference) downed Central Michigan University (9-14; 3-8 MAC) on Saturday evening in Millett Hall, 25-19, 29-27, 15-25, 25-23 to sweep the weekend series against the Chippewas.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Despite a back-and-forth battle to start the opening set, a kill from senior Gaby Harper that put Miami within one, 16-17, set things in motion. She sparked a 6-0 RedHawk run as Miami went on to a 25-19 win in the opening set.
- Trailing early in the second set, Miami chipped away and knotted the set, 17-17. The teams went toe-to-toe and a trio of kills from Gaby Harper and one by freshman Brooke Cirigliano helped the RedHawks take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 29-27 win in the second set.
- Central Michigan took an early lead in the third set and went on to win, 25-15.
- Miami opened up the fourth set with an early 6-2 lead. The Chippewas came back and held a late 21-19 edge. Miami persisted and got a timely kill from sophomore Maggie McCrary and two key kills from senior Sophie Riemersma. Riemersma iced the match with a service ace to hand Miami the 25-23 win in the fourth set.
NOTES:
- Riemersma led the RedHawks with 14 kills and 13 digs.
- Gaby Harper added 11 kills and 13 digs.
- Freshman Lydia Harper contributed 40 assists, eight digs, three blocks and four kills.
