MSU Gets By Miami With Late Goal

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Miami took a 1-0 lead into the third period at Michigan State Saturday night, but the Spartans rallied with two goals, including the game-winner with 2:12 remaining, to post a 2-1 victory and sweep the weekend series from the RedHawks.

MU (1-3) got a first-period goal from Derek Daschke to jump in front, but couldn't capitalize on a five-minute major penalty in the second period with a golden opportunity to extend the lead. Miami outshot the home team 16-2 in the middle period, but remained in front by the slimmest of margins after 40 minutes played.

Michigan State (3-1) then seized the momentum with a goal by Jeremy Davidson 91 seconds into the third period. Davidson's third goal of the weekend evened the score at 1-1, which is how it would stay for most of the period in a near repeat of Friday night's matchup. However, the Spartans' Erik Middendorf broke through late to give Michigan State its third straight victory and send Miami to a third consecutive defeat.

RedHawks goalie Ludvig Persson made 22 saves on 24 MSU shots, while Drew DeRidder had 35 stops in the Michigan State net.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 15:08 1st (Miami 1-0) | Matt Barry made a beautiful play to set up Derek Daschke's goal that opened the scoring. After Jack Clement poked the puck his direction, Barry weaved across the ice to his right and somehow found a window between a trio of Spartans to feed Daschke cutting backdoor. The MU captain went top shelf for his first goal of the season to put the Red and White on top.
  • 01:31 3rd (Michigan State 1-1) | Mitchell Lewandowski slid a pass perfectly between two RedHawks to Kristof Papp, who spun around 180 degrees and dished off to Davidson. Davidson rebounded his own shot and poked the second chance home to level the game at 1-all.
  • 17:48 3rd (Michigan State 2-1) | The Spartans got a late 2-on-2 rush, which turned into a game-winning goal for Erik Middendorf from the right side of the net off assists from Josh Nodler and Griffin Loughran.

GAME NOTES:
  • Miami outshot the hosts for a second straight night, firing 36 shots on goal to just 24 for MSU. Chase Gresock led MU with a half dozen shots on goal.
  • The RedHawks finished 0-2 on the power play and did not allow a Michigan State power play.
  • Michigan State won 36 faceoffs compared to Miami's 28, including 11 of the first 13 draws.
  • Barry's first-period assist was the 25th of his career.
  • Miami was credited with 13 blocked shots; Michigan State had 16 blocks.
  • Persson allowed two or less goals for the 10th time in his 21 career starts.
