YPSILANTI, Mich.—Despite a strong 25-16 win in the opening set, the Miami University volleyball team (3-15; 1-7 Mid-American Conference) dropped a four-set decision at Eastern Michigan University (8-11; 3-5 MAC) on Friday evening in the Convocation Center, 25-16, 22-25, 20-25, 18-25.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Miami used a 7-2 flurry to push ahead to a 9-5 lead in the first set and did not look back as the RedHawks collected a solid 25-16 win to open the match. A service ace by sophomore Taylor Nomanson handed the RedHawks a double-digit advantage and their largest lead of the set at 21-11.
- The Eagles opened up an 8-3 lead in the second set and pushed their advantage to seven. The RedHawks battled back and used an 8-1 surge that included three kills from senior Sophie Riemersma and a service ace by senior Gaby Harper to knot the set, 21-21. Miami was unable to overtake EMU as the Eagles notched a 25-22 win in the second set.
- EMU again got off to a quick start, posting an 8-3 advantage in the third set. The Eagles extended their lead to 20-9, but Miami fired back with a 10-2 run to close within two, 22-20. EMU went on to score the final three points to take the third set, 25-20.
- In the fourth set, the Eagles were able to gain a lead early on and did not look back as they won the fourth set, 25-18.
NOTES:
- Riemersma paced Miami with 16 kills, 14 digs and three blocks.
- Gaby Harper added 10 kills and 15 digs.
- Nomanson posted a team-leading 16 digs.
- Freshman Lydia Harper amassed 39 assists.
