
Field Hockey Cruises Past Ball State in 5-0 MAC Victory

Oxford, Ohio — The Miami University field hockey team defeated Ball State University 5-0 on Friday afternoon to earn their third straight victory. After an even first 15 minutes, the RedHawks took control of the game and never looked back. The win brings Miami's record to 6-6 overall and 3-0 in the MAC, while Ball State falls to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in MAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first 15 minutes between Miami and Ball State was a very back-and-forth defensive affair. Neither team recorded a shot or penalty corner and the score stayed deadlocked at 0-0.
- With just under 11 minutes left in the second quarter, Claudia Negrete Garcia tapped in the go-ahead goal on an assist from Paula Pena to put the RedHawks up 1-0. Miami's attack picked up in the second quarter, and as a result, the RedHawks led in shots 9-0 and in penalty corners 7-0 at the half.
- Lexie Nugent quickly added to the RedHawks lead with a goal on an assist from Noor Breedijk and Claudia Negrete Garcia with 14:04 left in the third quarter, making the score 2-0.
- Paula Pena scored with 8:25 left in the third quarter to extend Miami's lead to 3-0.
- After 45 minutes, the RedHawks led the Cardinals in shots 14-4 and 8-5 in penalty corners.
- Pena took it coast to coast after forcing a turnover, to tally her second goal of the game and made the score 4-0 RedHawks with 14:24 left in the match.
- Negrete Garcia scored her second goal of the game off of a give-and-go, giving the assist to Kailie Connor. The goal made the score 5-0 and was Garcia's ninth of the season, which is the most in the MAC.
- Miami finished the game with 16 shots and eight corners compared to six and seven respectively for Ball State. Isabelle Perese added five saves in a clean sheet performance.
